The Best Christmas Display Ever: Extended Family Coming Through (2020)

The Best Christmas Window Display in the World

We have been finding lots of creative ways during the pandemic to connect with loved ones safely. We had the idea to try and go to Christmas in Color (a drive-through Christmas light display) with Grandma, Grandpa, Grandma Buzz, Mindee, and Aidee while the Hawaiians were in town. We got everyone psyched only to realize that they were sold out until after Christmas. Oops. K and I tried desperately to find something else we could all do together from our cars, but we totally struck out. Marcee suggested we just do a nice, long FaceTime instead. But then..... BUT THEN the next day we got a pretty cryptic Marco Polo from Marcee and Aidan to be at our window at 6:00 sharp for a Christmas surprise. All day they made it so epic with countdowns, and blacked out Marco Polos with the sound of jingle bells. We were so excited!! At like 5:30 they told us to close our blinds and we would get a text when we could come to the window. I didn't peek, and it took pretty much all of my will power... but I'm glad I didn't!!

We opened the window to the most spectacular sight I've ever seen. Marcee, Mindee, Aidee, and Darby were dressed in blow up costumes with Christmas lights in them dancing around our yard. They started with "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas," and then the kiddo shouted for "Jingle Bells." The music changed so quickly I was astonished! From where I was standing I couldn't see that Jordan was there to run music. The kiddo even got a special visit from Santa!!! It was so fun and completely magical. We even got to wave to Grandma Buzz Buzz who was in the car! We felt so much love coming through that window to us. It just filled up our entire yard, and into our home. Our duplex neighbors opened their window, and some other neighbors paused on their walk to watch. Such a silly, goofy idea spread so much joy. I was texting with a friend the day before about how stressed she is about Christmas because some members of her family are challenging their decisions to distance and wear masks. We could not have more opposite experiences. Not only did our family not give us any grief for our decision to distance during the pandemic, but they came together in such a special, fun, and magical way to remind us just how much they love us!!! They found a way to celebrate with us creatively, and I think it is one of the most special holiday gifts I've ever received. It truly embodied the spirit of Christmas. Joy, compassion, selfless giving, and hope. Plus it was absolutely hilarious. The perfect cocktail.
